When nobody needs the mainstream media anymore?
Following the election, The New York Times started their breast-beating. How could we get it so wrong they asked? All the polls, all the pre-vote data, seemed to indicated that Clinton would win this damn thing.
John Herrman’s excellent piece, “An Election Ill Timed For Media in Transition,” is particular germane to the theme of this blog.
I’m not going to get into the desirability of one candidate over another. Millions of people in the USA, and these were the best we could come up with? Granted.
But most of the sentiment I came across on Facebook — my main source of social media — indicated that there was really no choice for people who thought as I did (liberal, educated, semi-affluent): Trump was a toad, which I know insults the rest of the toad population. You can insert just about any bad character trait and it would apply: bully, racist, liar, misogynist, xenophobic, sexual predator, creep, et al. Pretty much anything other than outright criminal (and even that was questionable). He had the support of white supremacists and denied knowing that such groups even existed. Like a vampire, he prowled late at night, looking to attack his detractors via twitter. Who would want someone like this in the highest office in the land?
Enough voters, apparently.
